Bump Stop Guide

There are many different companies and variations of bump stops to choose from, it can be overwhelming. Kmc Offroad is here to share our knowledge from testing, building and installation of suspensions. Note we are like everyone out there, this information is a basic guide for choosing the right bump stop since everyone's rig will have some variations.

2.0 Bump Stops

Best suited for vehicles under 5000 lbs

Mild desert racing, Trail Running, Rock Crawlers, Rock Bouncers, and Sand Rails

Vehicle up travel plays a big role in choosing the proper length of bump stops.

  • Less than 3'' of up travel 2'' travel bump stop is typically best suited
  • 3-4'' of up travel 3'' travel bump stop is typically best suited
  • 6''+ of up travel 4'' travel bump stop is typically best suited

2.5 Bump Stops

Best suited for 5,000lbs or greater

  • Trailing arm suspension
  • A- arm suspension
  • Less than 3'' of up travel 2'' travel bump stop is typically best suited
  • 3-4'' of up travel 3'' travel bump stop is typically best suited
  • 6''+ of up travel 4'' travel bump stop is typically best suited

TUNING HYDRAULIC BUMP STOPS

Now that you may have a better idea of the best suited size and travel, Now comes tuning the bump stops

Kmc Offroad bump stops can be tuned to perfection two different ways.

1. Kmc bumps have compression and rebound shim stacks like you will find in high quality shocks. The shims can be modified to suit your needs.

2. Nitrogen pressure can be adjusted.

Like all custom suspensions, getting it right is trial and error. The shorter the bump stop the higher the nitrogen pressure needs to be. Typically we start with a nitrogen charge of 300-400psi. You will see a O-ring on the bump shaft, that is used for a gauge to see how much the bump stop has traveled as it will be pushed down as the bump stop travels. Ideally you want the O-ring around 3/8" from the bottom. So by adjusting the nitrogen pressure up or down to accomplish this spec. The 3/8" tolerance will give you that little bit extra piece of mind for when you slam into something harder than expected, the bump stop will have the little bit extra for protection.
